Middle English: from Old French caractere, via Latin from Greek kharaktēr ‘a stamping tool.’ From the early sense ‘distinctive mark’ arose ‘token, feature, or trait’ (early 16th century), and from this ‘a description, especially of a person's qualities,’ giving rise to ‘distinguishing qualities.’

A Modern Viking
There was once a Viking named Erik the Red,
who pillaged and plundered and then he had fled,
with blood on his hands and a stomach of dread,
he laid low on a ship after making his bed,
He colonized Greenland after exiled from home,
his son Lief returning to Iceland to roam,
Despite savagery I saw one thing to admire,
they knew who they were, and led men to aspire,
Explorers they were, bread in their heart,
Gritty, witty, navigating the dark,
As norse blood began boiling in me,
of Viking tales and adventures that would set me free,
I crafted a name to set me apart,
Call me Erik the Blue, and that's where we'll start,
for the ice in my eyes, and song of a lark,
I'll take you to journey in the path of an arc,
Leaving blood, I'll use guts and take all the glory,
By fighting for wisdom in each of my stories,
I'll hunt paradox in a quest for the truth,
Uncovering asymptotes of pendulums, which balanced, can soothe,
For change is the constant, chaos in order,
I'll write without limits, no shame, and no border,
This is my promise, from a modern viking,
Will you join me and row, through waves uniting?
1: One who sails for truth, an adventurer of the soul, balancing self reflection with action, demanding the most of oneself and one's tribe

A firm decision to do or not to do something; late Middle English (in the senses ‘dissolve, disintegrate’ and ‘solve (a problem)’): from Latin resolvere, from re- (expressing intensive force) + solvere ‘loosen.’
