I was completely surprised by my random pick, The Chain by Ted Genoways. I thought this would be another title similar to A Bone to Pick by Mark Bittman. Something to consider modern food processing, but I did not expect it to be essentially a case study of my home town company, Hormel Foods, in Austin, MN. I learned from a very different perspective a history whose undertones are carried through the community, yet rarely talked about as I grew up post-strike. It was educational, though it didn't dissuade me from returning home July 7, 2017 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the release of Spam and commemoration of Spam Day being an officially recognized day by the state of Minnesota.

Mondays: Illuminating new pathways

Etymology:

  • Middle English monday or mone(n)day
  • Old English mon(an)dæg "day of the moon"
  • Latin dies lunae "day of the moon"
  • Ancient Greek hemera selenes "day of the moon"

The moon is the primary night light of the skies, illuminating the land brightly on the nights of the full moon and receding again to the mystery of complete darkness at the new moon. As a mirror that reflects the light of the sun, the moon represents the shadow side of the sun’s light, and the mystery and fear within our souls. Use this Monday to explore a new book, consider other point of view, and choose a new path to explore.
